All eyes When you slather on the sunscreen this summer, don’t
forget to protect your peepers, too. Consultant ophthalmic and oculoplastic surgeon Dr Elizabeth Hawkes says the eyelid
area is a common spot for skin cancer, while ultraviolet (UV) light can accelerate cataract formation and cause other eye damage.
‘Look for UV 400 protection,’ advises Dr Hawkes. ‘I’d also suggest choosing oversized sunglasses to protect the eyelid
skin.’ Tinted and prescription lenses can reduce eye strain, while polarised ones cut glare from surfaces such as water. Most sunscreen is safe to use on eyelids, but mineral and stick options are less likely to cause irritation. Or opt for a targeted SPF eye cream instead.
