Puerto Rico is Spanish for “rich port.” The island earned that name after gold was discovered in its soil and streams in 1508. Spain
removed an annual average of one ton of gold from Cuba, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico before
the supply gave out. Many of Puerto Rico’s gold deposits were depleted by the mid-1500s, but
modern technology has made mining an industry once again.
