IN THE FALL OF 2022, THE PUBLIC MET A NEW
TECHNOLOGY CALLED CHATGPT. It’s a bot that
uses arti cial intelligence to answer questions. Its
answers can sometimes be hard to distinguish from
human writing.
Engineers created ChatGPT by feeding it
huge amounts of text from the internet, digital
books, and other sources. It learned to nd patterns,
such as what words usually go together. Humans
helped train the bot by chatting with it and giving
feedback on how well it did. Now ChatGPT can have
conversations, compose essays and poems, and even
write computer code. It sometimes makes things up,
though, so users have to be careful. And teachers
worry that students will cheat by pretending
ChatGPT’s answers are their own.
(For the record, ChatGPT did not write this. But
someday soon, maybe an arti cially intelligent bot
will take over this page, and this writer will go on a
nice vacation. Hawaii, maybe?)
