Sturgeon arrested: In what could prove a blow to
Scottish prospects for independence, police detained
Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s former leader, this week
in an investigation into the finances of her Scottish
National Party. Sturgeon faced six hours of questioning before being released without charges.
“To find myself in the situation I did today, when I am certain I
have committed no offense, is both a shock and deeply distressing,” she said. Police have been looking into the possible misuse
of $754,000 raised for a Scottish independence campaign since
2021, and Sturgeon’s husband, former party chief executive Peter
Murrell, and another official were detained in April but also
released without charges. Sturgeon led the SNP and was the head
of the semi-autonomous Scottish government for more than eight
years before unexpectedly resigning in February
