Monroe had an active role in just about every one of those events. He was an offi

cer in the Continental Army. He served as a delegate in the Virginia House, a dele

gate to the Congress of the Confederation, and a delegate to Virginia’s ratifying con

vention for the Constitution. He served as a minister to foreign nations and as a
Cabinet member in the administrations of three presidents. In Virginia, he was
elected U.S. senator and governor. In 1816, Monroe won election as the fifth
U.S. president—and the fourth president from Virginia. His years in office became
known as the “Era of Good Feelings.” He also practiced law, farmed, was married,
and raised a family. He led a full life at an exciting time in U.S. history.
